DESCRIPTION
The impact of a cancer diagnosis on a child presents a unique and sometimes overwhelming challenge to families, teachers and others in that child’s life. Given the serious nature of their disease and the intensive medical treatments required to combat it, young people with cancer are at risk of encountering difficulties upon re-entering the school setting. Most children with cancer will attend school while undergoing treatment, but are likely to fall behind in their academic pursuits due to absences or fatigue. Families struggle to guide their child through hospitals, tests, treatments and uncertainty. This is often complicated by the need to manage a job and other family responsibilities.
This program will familiarize family members, educators and school professionals (i.e., teachers, nurses, social workers, counselors, psychologists) with the unique challenges presented by the return to school of a child diagnosed with cancer. The goal is to promote communication among family members, educators and medical professionals so that together they will be able to provide the child who has cancer an appropriate education leading to a productive and rewarding life.
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to convey general information on childhood cancer, its treatment and side effects that may accompany treatment; identify some of the long-term effects of childhood cancer; describe the return-to-school issues for the child, family, classmates and school professionals; and discuss the effect of a parent’s cancer diagnosis on a child. Numerous breakout sessions will allow participants to choose among topics of special interest to parents, educators and and school professionals.
