Roswell Park Cancer Institute is the oldest center dedicated to providing total care to the cancer patient, to conducting research into the causes, treatment and prevention of cancer, and to educating the next generation of those who study and treat cancer. Roswell Park was one of the first three cancer centers named by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a model for comprehensive centers following the adoption of the National Cancer Act in 1971. Today, it is one of only 40 centers designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the NCI.

Roswell Park brings together on one campus a staff of 2,700, including over 200 clinicians and scientific faculty, all devoted to cancer care, research and education. An affiliation agreement with the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences designates Roswell Park as the primary teaching facility in oncology for the University.

Clinical fellowships at Roswell Park provide physicians with advanced clinical training in oncology and in oncologic research. Fellows spend from one to two or more years in the Institute's advanced clinical training programs and have the opportunity to conduct clinical and basic research projects in their areas of specialization under the supervision of senior staff.

Fellowship training is offered in 18 clinical areas: anesthesiology, bone marrow transplantation, breast surgery, dermatology, diagnostic radiology, gynecology, head and neck surgery, investigational therapeutics, maxillofacial prosthetics, medical oncology and hematology, neurosurgery, nuclear medicine, pathology, pediatrics, radiation medicine, GI surgery, thoracic surgery and urology.  Click here to review the Surgical Oncology Fellowship brochure (this is a PDF file and requires adobe acrobat)

The clinical case mix at Roswell Park is varied; with site-specific data for 30 cancer sites recorded each year. Patients have access to a full range of oncology diagnostic and treatment services, including access to therapies not available elsewhere in the region. Specialized treatments include bone marrow transplantation, brachytherapy, high-dose chemotherapy, immunotherapy, photodynamic therapy, radiosurgery, a pediatric follow-up clinic for adolescents and young adults successfully treated for childhood cancer, and a Regional Center for Maxillofacial Prosthetics.

Fellows find their clinical skills are sharpened through their fellowship experience at Roswell Park, yet caseloads permit them the time and opportunity to learn clinical or basic research, attend seminars, study, and write papers. The interaction between the basic scientists and clinical fellows creates an environment that nurtures state-of-the-art basic, applied and clinical research. About 35 percent of our patients participate in clinical treatment protocols. Our patients are the immediate beneficiaries of the progress made in our laboratories, and our clinical fellows are partners in setting the standards for oncology care.

In addition to gaining clinical and research experience, fellows have the opportunity to pursue masters, doctoral or MPH degrees through the Roswell Park Graduate Division of the State University of New York at Buffalo.
